Money Making Websites

Google’s Chrome Web Store is here. We covered its launch this week, detailing Google’s new marketplace for Web-based “apps.”

The apps, which are currently free, are essentially just bookmarks to existing websites. But that wil all soon change as the keyword here is “store.” As cool as Google’s Chrome OS is, there’s no way publishers are jumping onto yet another platform to hand out free apps. Smart publishers only want to create new apps for platforms when those apps will make them money.

The Google Chrome Webstore, and other browser app stores like Mozilla’s similarly announced endeavorer, will be a landmark opportunity for publishers to charge for content whether it’s on the Web, a smartphone, an iPad or any yet to be seen tablet.

So will it work?

With the appropriate amount of scale, the app market has the potential to offer content providers an entirely new and unexplored avenue for distribution.  Thus, if an applications market can develop outside of the current model, and convince consumers to purchase the devices that service those ecosystems, then media companies have a chance to benefit from this exciting new addition to the app marketplace. –Howard Mittman, Publisher of Wired

First and foremost, Google’s Chrome Web Store gives publishers a presence.

Steve Kurtz, VP of Digital Development at USA TODAY, who has already placed an app in Google’s Chrome Web Store says, “I think it gives us the opportunity to execute our business strategy, whether that’s paid content or display advertising or a combination of both. What’s beneficial about the Web store is that it makes these applications easier to find and may attract new customers that may not be using our other applications or visiting our website.”

But beyond presence, and brand recognition, publishers need to make money. For the market to work, consumer’s buying habits have to warrant charging for content. Simply put, as buyers we can’t want or have free everything anymore. Google and publishers are banking on the fact that Apple’s iOS store, Android’s Marketplace and iTunes have changed the average user’s mentality so that they are now willing to pay for content, whether it be movies, music, books or news, if it’s easy for them to do so.

USA Today’s Kurtz agrees:

“Certainly consumers are willing to pay for the right content and experience. Everyone is in the early stages of figuring out that formula and the next year should provide some interesting case studies,” he says.

It’s been done before. Now it seems, it’s Google’s turn to do the same.

“One of the big dreams of the whole Web platform is that on the Web, you can create something once and it can be viewed across all the different browsers. Apple said if you want to play in our space you’ve got to do it this way and we had to because of Apple’s massive adoption Since Apple allows us to charge money, it made even more sense.,” says Mark Mangan, CEO and Publisher of Flavorpill.

The NYTimes app is free for now and available through the Chrome Web Store. But readers will be asked to pay for access to the content of the app when The Times launches its pay model next year.

“We currently enjoy a digital business dominated by advertising. The introduction of our pay model for our digital products will enable us to add another lucrative revenue stream. We expect in the future that all our products will have dual revenue streams in some measure,” says Denise Warren, Senior VP and Chief Advertising Officer for The New York Times Media Group and GM of NYTimes.com.

Publishers can potentially start making money for these “Web apps,” where they haven’t been able to before because consumers are not used to paying for websites. Currently, the “apps” in Google Chrome’s Web Store are HTML5 websites that have been designed to look like apps. Chrome enables certain functions that won’t work in other browsers and users also can’t buy or “install” an app except in Chrome. One major long term benefit for publishers is that HTML5 allows for offline usage, and slicker, more app-like features with polished designs.

“As the Web continues to evolve, we are harnessing new tools – like HTML5 – to enhance how our readers interact with The Times and to develop a more engaging experience,” said Warren of The New York Times. “This app is a unique opportunity for our advertisers to align their brand with The Times’s affluent and influential audience on an innovative new platform.”

With offline storage, users will be able to download a game, magazine or book to enjoy even when they’re not connected to the Internet. Google and publishers are hoping that with that a new consumer mindset and HTML5 functionality, that Webstores will be what iTunes and app stores are for mobile, but on the Web. With the Chrome Web Store, Google TV and Google eBooks are their way, it seems as if Google is thinking of becoming a much more transactional entreprise.

So how will Google profit? In a recent CNET interview, Google Engineering Director Linus Upson described what sets Chrome Web Store apart from the other Web stores. First, he says, while the Chrome Store will collect a fee when it sells an app, Google is not trying to make its store a profit center. “We collect only enough to cover our costs,” Upson says. According to the same interview, Google will process several types of payments for developers such as up-front purchasing of an app, recurring subscription fees, and in-app add-on purchases through Google Checkout. Developers will also have the option to put Google ads into their apps–and this is where Google will likely make most of its money. When Mozilla launches their own Firefox app store, it will also benefit publishers greatly as Firefox currently has a larger audience than Chrome in the US and worldwide. And Google’s Upson implied to CNET that Google would either contribute to this effort or adopt its final spec.

In 2008, the publishing world realized it was serious trouble. Glossy magazines became emaciated. Newspapers folded into twilight. People were no longer picking up magazines and newspapers like they once were. But we still hungered for content, we just didn’t know how or where to turn. Many believe the industry has now been saved by something tangible, yet digital, a connected tablet on which we can read all of our daily news, watch all of our favorite movies, tv shows, play our favorite games, and communicate with our social networks. We’ve got a few devices with different browsers and operating systems to access content from, but how will it all come together in a seamless way?

This is exactly what Google is aiming to do. Will Google’s Chrome Web Store be a real gamechanger for publishers? The real question is, will you pay for richer Web-”app” based content?

Privacy and the Internet of Things is a huge topic that's barely been touched on - at all. That's cause for serious concern. What will the best practices be for maintaining security across a more-fully networked world, while still preserving strong civil liberties? Where is the line between smart system monitoring and analytics on one hand - and illegal search and seizure on the other?

Those questions will need to be tackled and until they are - things are likely to be both creepy and frustrating.

  • What will vigilantes be capable of in a networked world?

  • Last week some members of Anonymous decided that the DDOS attacks they were carrying out weren't making a big enough impact, and put out a call for a new effort. Called "Operation Leakspin," these would-be organizers asked Anonymous participants to stop doing DDOS attacks and instead focus their energy on analyzing the diplomatic cables published by Wikileaks. Operation Leakspin called on participants to find details and scandals in the cables that the mainstream media wasn't finding or reporting on.

    Are the participants in the DDOS capable of doing better sleuthing through years of high-context diplomatic documents than specialists in these matters at the New York Times and Guardian? I asked that question of security researcher Sean-Paul Correll of Panda Labs, who has been documenting the work of Anonymous for months. He said the group believed they were capable of recruiting sympathizers with nearly any skill set and outfitting them with the capacity to act on the Internet anonymously. If that proves to be untrue in the case of Leakspin, Correll says, the group will simply decide on another tactic and resume recruiting for that.

    What does that mean for a future when cities are dependent on smart grids? Will angry vigilante groups be able to recruit people with the technical skills to perform sophisticated disruptions of those networks? Or will they have to rely on brute force attacks like the DDOS attacks they are best known for using in the case of the group known as Anonymous? What kinds of disruption will non-specialists be able to foist on these networks and how will network providers be able to protect themselves while still preserving the civil liberties of their users?

    These are just three big questions that are brought to mind by the rise of politically motivated anonymous vigilante disruption of the online networks we use today. Tomorrow is fast approaching and it would behoove us to consider these questions before it arrives.

    1 internet marketing

    There was a time when marketing men were like politicians. They had to shake hands and kiss babies, take district reps out for a lunch meeting and have dinner with the guy who could open up new territory but those days have gone the way of the piano lounge in the airplane. Now, we video conference with the reps, connect with customers by email and Facebook and use Linkedin to network with the guy who can help you open a store in Kansas.

    Yeah for the internet! But Renee Huang of The Globe and Mail says that the internet is a poor substitute for the old fashioned meet and greet.

    “Research in the business-to-business world suggests the No. 1 reason for selection of a supplier is the personality of the sales team or seller. This is above the technical specs, marketing form, anything else.”

    Huang goes on to talk to several small business owners who say that face time with potential clients and customers was key to their success.

    Now, I’ll admit that as a collective, we’ve gotten overly dependent on the internet. My friend recently lost her home connection for two days and you would have thought she was living without food and water. I’m not mocking, believe me, I feel the same way. I work and play online. I’ve never met 99% of the people I do business with, but that hasn’t stopped me from doing business and doing it well.

    My husband, on the other hand, is a face-to-face guy. When ever I’m frustrated over a communication breakdown with a client he starts in with, “why don’t you try picking up the phone instead of this ridiculous emailing back and forth!”

    Ah! Texting! That’s the answer!

    I guess the biggest advantage to a meet and greet is that it’s harder to say no to a person’s face than to their Facebook. And I suppose that some people will reward the effort if you show up at their office with a box of cupcakes (even if you’re not selling cupcakes.) But when it comes to you, to your business, do you really think that your business would be better off if you could travel the country and pitch your wares one-on-one?

    Face time, if you can get it, is a good thing, I’m sure. But when I count up how many business emails I get after midnight and on weekends, I doubt that anyone has time for a leisurely lunch to discuss the sale of a new product. That is, unless you don’t mind meeting at an all-night diner.

    What are your thoughts on face time versus connecting via the internet?

    Making Money Guide

    In embodying the actual meaning of "charity", nothing beats the Heifer Project.

    Heifer International is in the business of ending world hunger. And it's actually working; today millions of people were fed thanks to 65 years of Heifer projects. And those people are standing on their own feet, and helping others to stand up. They aren't second-class clients of wealthy people suffering from liberal guilt, living on scraps; they are as good as anyone else in the world and they know it.

    Heifer doesn't give sandwiches to people living unsustainable lifestyles in a unproductive wasteland. Those people will starve the minute you stop sending sandwiches, and in the meantime you've reduced them to beggary, and that's going to wreck their indigenous culture (if they have any left) and diminish them as individuals. Giving people food doesn't work as a long term solution, it's only worth doing in short term recovery situations as a part of a broader strategy.

    Heifer provides people in war-torn and disaster-wrecked communities with the tools to build a sustainable future based on livestock and agriculture carefully chosen to suit the needs, abilities, and history of the inhabitants of those communities.

    Please read about Heifer on their website at www.heifer.org - I'm not an employee or in any other way associated with heifer, although over the years I have helped buy an elephant, dozens of heifers, and many chickens, bees, and ducks.

    Heifer is different. It's better. Recipients of Heifer assistance aren't asked to "pay it back" - they are required to "pay it forward" by helping somebody else get back on their feet. This means a homeless single mother doesn't have to sacrifice her pride in order to feed her children, in fact she will get to involve the children in an worthwhile global enterprise. Once she's paid forward, she can continue to be involved with charity work or not, as she pleases.

    Since this is the Boing, I feel that I should point out that while Heifer was started by a Christian in accordance with his beliefs, it is not evangelical and does not discriminate based on faith or lack thereof. You are welcome to believe what you like as long as you want to help world hunger.

    Making Money on Line

    Note: I wrote this before RAW aired tonight. By the looks of it, the person who "wronged" Punk may have been John Cena. Anyways, I'd written this already so thought I may as well go ahead and post it.

    CM Punk's words last week resonated loudly among those watching.

    "When people wrong me, I get even. Right now, backstage somewhere, there is another individual that has wronged me."

    I was beginning to forget Punk was even an active competitor as he's doing such a stellar job behind the commentary table.

    But who could the mysterious man be that Punk has set his sights on?

    Following last night's TLC PPV I believe Randy Orton is a very possible contender.

    Orton failed to re-capture the WWE Championship from the Miz in his rematch and is now out of the title picture. As it stands, the Royal Rumble will likely be headlined by The Miz versus John Morrison—and you'll hear no complaints from me.

    The bottom line is Orton needs a feud.

    The Nexus are pretty much dead and gone and he's out of the title picture for the time being. The only main event heel currently active on RAW other than the Miz is Sheamus and if I have to watch Orton versus Sheamus for the 57th time I think my head might explode.

    CM Punk is definitely a main event heel, but he is currently rehabing an injury. But he's on the cusp of a return.

    He's scheduled for a number of Smackdown house shows this week and made an ominous threat upon accepting his "Despicable Me" award.

    But why would they feud at all?

    The History

    Alright, so I know WWE doesn't like us remembering stuff, but I do.

    So here's the tale.

    2006

    In November 2006, Orton and Punk met in the ring for the first time ever as members of Team RKO and Team DX, respectively. They traded a few blows in the match but nothing major.

    In the end none of Team DX was eliminated and won the match.

    2007

    In the week leading up to Wrestlemania 23 and the Money in the Bank match in 2007, Punk and Orton crossed paths in three separate occasions.

    On the March 26 edition of RAW, Punk and Orton—along with King Booker, Finlay, Mr. Anderson, AHEM, Mr. Kennedy, and the Hardyz—brawled during an episode of the Cutting Edge to hype the MITB match.

    The following night on ECW (yeah, I don't remember what that is either) the heels (Orton, Kennedy, Finlay and Booker) beat the good guys (Punk, Edge and the Hardyz) in a four on four tag team match after King Booker pinned Punk.

    On the night of Wrestlemania 23, Mr. Kennedy won the MITB briefcase.

    One of the highlights of the match for me was an awesome RKO on Punk from the top of a ladder.

    2008

    A year later, CM Punk won the converted Money on the Bank brief case at Wrestlemnia 24.

    On the same night Orton retained the WWE Championship against Triple H and John Cena, only to lose it to Trips at Backlash.

    On the May 5th edition of RAW, Orton and CM Punk met in their first one-on-one encounter with Orton looking to send a message to Triple H. The match was cut short when William Regal killed the lights and announced the match over.

    The result was a no contest.

    There's already a company trying to plant solar panels in highway cloverleafs.

    -----------------------

    http://republicpropertiescorp.com/about/solar

    http://www.cloverleafsolarhighways.com/

    Introducing Solar Highways

    Republic Cloverleaf Solar is proud to announce its plans to bring a new approach to solar energy in Santa Clara County. Called the Solar Highways, this exciting project will bring solar farms to currently vacant Caltrans land along US Highway 101.

    Proposed for seven Caltrans interchanges, the Solar Highways would intermittently stretch 20 miles from Gilroy to San Jose. The solar installations will consist of a 15-megawatt system located on 65 acres of property that will offset over 15,500 metric tons of carbon per year.

    The first project of its kind, the Solar Highways will contribute numerous benefits to the community including a new viable renewable energy source, green jobs, revenue for the State of California and significant carbon emission offsets. In fact, this project will offset over two million car miles traveled per year.

    The Solar Highways project will become a model for solar energy collection upon its completion. With solar energy a high priority for many key local and state agencies, this project has broad based support from many elected leaders and community organizations.

    Making Money Secrets

    B. Wayne Hughes, the chairman of Public Storage, was American Crossroads'
    first official donor. He gave the group an additional $950,000 in late
    October, and now has contributed to $3.5 million to American Crossroads,
    according to the Center's research.

    Trevor Rees-Jones, the
    president and chief executive officer of Dallas-based Chief Oil and Gas,
    has given American Crossroads $2 million this year.

    Robert Rowling, the chief executive officer of TRT Holdings, has
    given the group $2.5 million since its founding. Notably, his company
    has also given $2.5 million from its treasury -- including a $1
    million infusion of cash in June.

    And Texas home builder Bob Perry, famous for his financial support of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth,
    which produced ads critical of Democrat John Kerry's Vietnam military
    service during the 2004 presidential election, also made a series of investments in
    American Crossroads totaling $7 million since early September.

    Jonathan Collegio, the spokesman for American Crossroads, told the Washington Post on Thursday that Crossroads Grassroots Policy Strategies -- a sister organization
    of American Crossroads that is not required to disclose information
    about its donors -- raised an additional $43 million this year.

    Crossroads
    GPS, legally defined as a 501(c)4 nonprofit designed to promote "social welfare,"
    spent $17 million on political messages and advertisements this election
    cycle, according to the Center's research. Crossroads GPS saw its preferred candidates win in 71 percent of the races in which it invested money.

    Combined, Crossroads GPS and American Crossroads spent more on outside political messages than all other groups except the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the National Republican Congressional Committee and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

    The companies that made direct contributions to American Crossroads
    between Oct. 14 and Election Day are listed below, along with the amount
    given and date of the donation.

    Aaron Brazell notes, as many have, that it’s amusing to watch the apoplexy aimed at Julian Assange and WikiLeaks for posting stolen classified documents while his co-conspirators in the mainstream press publish them with next to no criticism.    But Aaron moves from this to make a more novel argument, namely that Assange is threatening to topple what’s left of the traditional media business model.

    he media is on the sideline, their power usurped from this rogue operative with a rogue website. Instead of the New York Times or Washington Post benefitting from the receipt of leaked information as has been the case in their traditional past (see Watergate), an upstart “news organization” is stealing their thunder. Sure the Times and a variety of other media outlets were given the data eventually, but the arbiter of information was no longer them.

    While the media wrings their hands over a contrived battle between the morality of publishing leaked, national security documents and preservation of national secrets, the bigger capitalistic battle is happening and that overshadows journalistic sense of responsibility.

    The ability to be first is being tainted here. While Wikileaks promises to distribute new information, acting as a benevolent dictator, to news organizations, these news organizations are capitulating their responsibilities simply to make sure they have some crumbs off of Assange’s table.

    No one, certainly, is suggesting that news outlets should become a lap-dog, as I have heard toss around, of the government, bowing to their every will and whim. Certainly not, lest we live in a Communist system. However, the media is expected to operate in a suitably responsible way.

    In this case, the media knows that they are on the outs. In a last gasp of industry-pride, they have sacrificed themselves in a last-ditch effort to remain relevant. Put in another way, they have come to serve themselves instead of the people they exist to serve.

    I’m not sure I agree with either part of this.

    WikiLeaks and Newspaper Profits

    First, it’s true that the Internet has been killing the old business model based on advertisements in printed copies.  And WikiLeaks is to some extent furthering this.  But, as it is, WikiLeaks is only important because hundreds of reporters from well established newspapers are sifting through the piles of mostly worthless documents to ferret out what’s interesting and distill it for their readership.

    The upshot is that Assange is handing these papers mini-scoops and exciting stories to cover, thus boosting their bottom line.   By contrast, I haven’t the foggiest notion of how Assange is making any money off of this.

    Now, it’s conceivable that Assange could bypass the Guardian, Times, and others and simply dump them out there for crowdsourcing.  Maybe Josh Marshall and the TPM gang or Arianna Huffington’s minions over at HuffPo would do the sorting, instead.   But right now, the threat to the mainstream media is minuscule at best.

    WikiLeaks and Journalistic Ethics

    Is the press here ignoring the real risks of going public with classified documents that could ostensibly cause real harm to their publics?  Maybe.  Then again, this is hardly the first time.   Leaks are the bread and butter of scoop journalism and they have been for some time.

    Further, it appears — granted, we have nothing to go on but the publishers’ own accounts of the process — that the newspapers in question actually took the risks seriously, carefully vetting the information before going to press.   The NYT, especially, seemed to bend over backwards to get commentary from the US Government and to pass along any objections and their own redactions to other papers who’d received the dumps.

    Beyond that, once Assange made the documents publicly available on the Internet, the only thing the editors would have achieved by refusing to report on what was in them was to lose money.  Someone was going to report anything of interest.

    Turning full circle, I’d also note that there’s an important distinction between the conduct of the newspapers in question and of the WikiLeaks gang:  The former didn’t encourage the commission of crimes by those entrusted to protect America’s secrets and set up an elaborate conspiracy to make doing so easier.  Yes, they routinely cultivate sources with access to such information and happily abet legitimate whistleblowers.  But they’re not out to create anarchy just for the hell of it.

    tracking personal finances

    Recently I wrote that the deficit-cutting projects and media campaigns sponsored by billionaire Pete Peterson all "focus on the same narrow band of options" that "reflect far-right positions," but nevertheless are usually described in the media as "moderate" and "bipartisan."

    I received a response from an official at the Peterson Foundation. Out of courtesy, I will not name the person or quote their email in full. The official said that my statement was "patently untrue" and a "mischaracterization." Some of their other statements can be found below, along with my observations about them. My reply to the Foundation then follows:

    Foundation: "We strongly believe that Social Security must be preserved and protected. One of the goals of the Foundation is to ensure that this vital program is strong, solvent and secure for future generations, particularly America's most vulnerable populations ... "

    Peterson-funded projects have consistently given the impression that Social Security is contributing to the deficit (which it is prohibited by law from doing); that its long-term shortfall must be met primarily by benefit cuts, and only secondarily by revenues; and that it is acceptable to increase tax payments for the wealthy so gradually that it will take forty years for the payroll tax to cover the same percentage of wealth it covered more than twenty years ago.

    To be fair, Peterson-funded proposals have recently included modest benefit increases for the lowest-income recipients.

    Foundation: "Mr. Peterson's personal views include the need to increase benefits for the poorest Americans receiving Social Security and reduce benefits for the well-off. He has suggested that progressive benefit reforms such as progressive wage indexing, affluence testing and increasing the payroll tax cap be considered."

    "Reducing benefits for the well-off" sounds reasonable - until you realize that this billionaire's definition of the "well off" includes people who earned an average of $43,000 per year during their work life. A 20-year-old who earned that average through their work life would see a 17% cut in benefits from one Peterson-backed proposal, and would see a 30% cut if they earned an average of $69,000. Under the Simpson-Bowles plan, even workers who made as little as $20,000 average would see benefit cuts starting in 2040.

    As for the truly wealthy who receive Social Security benefits, the problem is that there aren't enough of them to make a difference. Remember, retirement benefits only go up to a certain amount. It sounds reasonable to say that billionaires shouldn't receive a Social Security check (although they've paid for the benefit, too). But when you calculate the number of wealthy people that would be excluded under any reasonable plan, there aren't that many of them. When you add in all the time and expense of identifying them and tracking them (How would that be done? Cross-reference IRS returns and check their bank and real estate holdings?), studies have concluded you'd spend more to find them that you would save by cutting their benefits.

    Foundation: "Mr. Peterson and the Foundation have also repeatedly stated that we must consider all viable solutions from across the political spectrum if we hope to meaningfully address our fiscal challenges. As part of this process, the Foundation believes that it will be imperative that wealthier Americans contribute significantly to help stabilize our nation's finances, secure the social safety net and provide critically needed resources for education, research & development and infrastructure."

    Nevertheless, a recent Peterson-backed proposal (Rivlin/Domenici) would cut both Social Security benefits and Medicare spending, which would disproportionately harm seniors who are not wealthy. The same plan would also sharply lower the top marginal tax rate, from 35% to 27%, making up the difference with a highly regressive sales tax of 6.5% and percentage limits for tax deductions that would disproportionately benefit the wealthy.

    That is a "right-wing" plan by any measure. It's certainly not a plan in which "wealthier Americans contribute significantly to help stabilize our nation's finances."

    My response to the Foundation follows:

    ____________________

    Dear X:

    Despite your suggestion that my characterization of Mr. Peterson's views is misleading, it seems to me that the consistent themes behind every organization, study, and communications campaign Mr. Peterson has funded have been:

    • An overemphasis on balancing the budget in a time of economic crisis, when stimulus is urgently needed;

    • A failure to note the critical role the banking sector has played in creating today's deficits;

    • The mistaken notion that the country cannot continue to provide the current level of Social Security benefits;

    • A refusal to propose lifting the payroll tax cap to 100%, as polls show the public (including most Republicans) would prefer;

    • A refusal to consider returning to the marginal tax rates which were applied to high incomes in recent decades;

    • Proposals which would delay the process of returning the payroll to its 1980's-era level, when it covered 90% of all income as intended by the Greenspan Commission. (No liberal, that Alan Greenspan!) Some proposals funded by Mr. Peterson would delay this re-stabilization by as much as a half a century;

    • Social Security proposals that give greater weight to benefit cuts than to tax increases;

    • Communication campaigns designed to fuel the misconception that Social Security contributes to the general deficit; and,

    • A desire to convince the public that levels of debt considered manageable in other nations pose a grave threat here.

    I agree that long-term deficits are a grave and even critical problem. But these long-term debts are fueled almost exclusively by the truly staggering increases in health care costs that have been projected. Yet the projects funded by Mr. Peterson are notable for their lack of emphasis on health management programs that could contain these costs, as has been accomplished in other developed nations.

    I respect Mr. Peterson's accomplishments, which have given him the ability to promote his opinions in many different ways. But these opinions, however legitimate, are normally considered right-wing. The attempt to characterize these conservative views as "bipartisan" has been very successful from a marketing point of view, but has no basis in fact as far as I can see.

    Thank you for writing, and best regards -

    Richard Eskow

    PS: I saw that Mr. Peterson signed the Millionaire's Pledge. That's admirable, and I thank him for it.

    In the digital age, nobody likes carrying a lot of cash around – I know I don’t, anyway. This can be especially frustrating when you go to keep track of your expenses, who you owe money to, who you lent some to and just where it all goes over the month.

    As always, there are a lot of apps out there to help you do various things with your money. There are apps to figure out how to manage your money, oversee expenses, send money to people, keep track of who owes you, and more.

    In this article, I’ll show you some of the applications you can take advantage of to do everything I’ve mentioned here, leaving you free to pick and choose the apps that will make your life easier.

    id="more-58352">

    How to Manage Your Money

    I’m beginning to learn just how difficult managing your expenses can be. For the most part, I use my debit card tied to my checking account to make purchases. I use it at the grocery store, when I go out to lunch with my coworkers and on the weekend when I’m out exploring the city.

    At the end of the month, my bank statement looks pretty ridiculous. All of these small transactions make it difficult to sift through. I still know what everything is, but if I wanted to see where I could be saving some money I wouldn’t know the first place to look.

    Sounds like you? Even if it doesn’t, you could still reap the benefits of visually being able to manage your money. These apps make the process a lot easier.

    Mint

    style="text-align: center;">

    Mint has been on our radar since back in 2007 when Karl wrote about it. Plain and simple, if there is one app I want you to keep in mind it’s this one.

    Mint is a free personal finance application that can help you compare your bank accounts, credit cards, CDs, brokerage and 401(k) to the best products out there. It offers a visual representation of your finances and is very easy to set up. Use it to manage your budget, get credit card advice and understand investing.

    Here’s a great video showcasing an overview of Mint’s features:

    For some helpful tips on how to use Mint, check out Bakari’s article on How To Use Mint To Manage Your Budget & Spendings Online.

    Thrive

    Thrive (directory app) is also a great application if you’re looking for a simple way to keep track of your spending. With Thrive, you get an overall Financial Health score, which is one number that shows you how financially fit you are. It also shows you scores in other areas and offers you advice on how to make improvements.

    style="text-align: center;">

    Thrive breaks down your spending for you and shows you where you can save. Compare your current budget to last month’s, as well as view a six month average and target budgets to follow.

    Texthog

    Looking for an even simpler way to track expenses? Texthog (directory app) lets you easily store, organize and access your receipts, expense reports and more via text message, the web, your email, iPhone and even Twitter.

    style="text-align: center;">

    A Texthog free account gives one user the ability to track expenses, view unlimited reports and get budget/bill reminders. Take a photo of your receipts and utilize tags and categories to keep track of everything.

    To check out Texthog on your iPhone, you can find the application on iTunes.

    Venmo

    Speaking of text messages, have you heard of Venmo? Venmo (directory app) is a nice little app that lets you pay and charge friends with your phone. Send and receive secure payments by linking your card to your account. This allows you to settle small loans you give/get by eliminating paper transactions for small amounts of money.

    style="text-align: center;">

    To use Venmo, all you do is create an account. You can then send and receive money to other accounts simply by using text commands in SMS. Accept a “trust” request from your friends and make transactions without having to authorize them by texting a 3 digit code.

    This is a pretty solid application that I have been using a lot lately with my friends/coworkers. It’s great for when a bunch of you are out to lunch and not everyone has cash on them. “I’ll just put it on my card and Venmo you all afterwards.”

    Owe Me Cash

    style="text-align: center;">

    Owe Me Cash is a nice app I found recently that is also very easy to use. If someone owes you money, you just sign into Owe Me Cash with your Twitter, Facebook, OpenID, or regular account and tell the app about the debt. The app will send automatic reminders to those that owe you money by phone, text and email, so you can get paid!

    This app is more fun than serious, but it doubles as an easy way to keep track of who owes you what. Let the app bug your friends to pay you so you don’t have to do it yourself – it’s a win-win.

    Conclusion

    With these applications, your finances will never look better. Say goodbye to paper money and change.

    What do you think of these money-managing applications? Will you be using any of them?
